Jack & Tim brought an original song to Britain’s Got Talent and earned Simon Cowell’s golden buzzer. What they didn’t share on television was why they’d written it.
After losing two pillars of their family, a father and his young son wrote “The Lucky Ones” to help themselves through the grief. It wasn’t supposed to launch a career. Then 11-year-old Jack decided they should play it on his favorite TV show—and Dad apparently didn’t get a vote.
Now, with more than 400 million views across social media on that audition, the British father-son duo joins That Nashville Girl to share the family story behind it, the messages from strangers they still remember, and why Nashville became their next chapter.
And these two have STORIES. Jack went from The Voice Kids UK to playing guitar in the West End’s School of Rock, while his parents bought tickets night after night just to watch him.
There’s the move to America, an “Einstein visa” that might inspire a tattoo, and the determination to get Chris Stapleton’s mixer, Vance Powell, on their own album—and actually making it happen. They also talk “Dive Bar,” “615,” the McCrary Sisters, and how The Outsiders’ C. Thomas Howell ended up recording a contribution on his iPhone.
Meanwhile, the British accents are contagious, “y’all” is catching on, and Southern Charm’s Whitner Slagsvol leaves a question absolutely nobody saw coming. Come for the golden buzzer story. Stay for the dad and son you’ll want to keep rooting for. Subscribe to That Nashville Girl for more conversations with the artists you love—and the ones you’re about to discover.
