That Time I Met Lewis Brice On My Honeymoon | Throwback Thursday

In 2005, Lewis Brice took the stage at the Key West Songwriters Festival in a lineup overflowing with talent—and he was so impressive that I recognized him instantly when I crossed paths with him in Nashville a year later.

There was no Instagram following, no algorithm, and no constant stream of content to keep him familiar. Lewis simply had the kind of voice and stage presence you don’t forget.

Now, 20 years after that first Key West performance, Lewis Brice joins me for a full-circle conversation about the talent, tenacity, and work behind his lasting career in country music.

Lewis is far more than an incredible vocalist. He’s a recording artist, songwriter, producer, touring performer, independent label owner, and lifelong musician who has built an entire life through music.

His songwriting credits include “Promise,” recorded by Jelly Roll; he has released music with The Swon Brothers; and he continues building his own catalog through Pup House Records, the independent label he started with his brother, country artist Lee Brice.

We take it back to the Nashville of the mid-2000s: 12th & Porter, burned CDs, old-school Broadway, legendary Capitol Records showcases, and a music scene before rooftops and social media changed everything. Lewis also shares how seeing the rock band Fuel perform “Hemorrhage” helped convince him to move to Nashville and pursue music professionally.

But this Lewis Brice interview isn’t only about the past.

Lewis gets candid about what it really takes to sustain a career as an independent country artist—from writing and producing to touring, distribution, payroll, and the endless work audiences never see. He also talks about fatherhood, performing alongside his brother, and why stepping onstage still feels like the ultimate reward.
