Would the little girl you used to be believe the woman you’ve become? Melanie Dyer’s “If She Only Knew” brought Amanda to tears before they ever met. This is the conversation that song started.
Australian country singer and songwriter Melanie Dyer joins Amanda on That Nashville Girl to talk about her album Daisies From Dirt, moving to Nashville and chasing a dream long enough to forget how much you’ve already accomplished.
At 12, Melanie was writing songs on the front porch of her family’s farm in Australia. She wanted her voice to reach the world. Years later, after countless hours of travel, writing sessions and learning to hear “no” without letting it decide her future, she finally made Nashville home.
“If She Only Knew” takes her back to that little girl. And if you’ve ever questioned your timing, compared your life to someone else’s or needed a reminder of why you started, you’ll understand why Amanda couldn’t keep it together.
In this episode:
- The Listening Room performance that left Amanda too emotional to introduce herself
- Writing “If She Only Knew” as a letter to her younger self
- Surprising her mom with “Mama Knows Best” in front of their hometown
- Writing “Daisies From Dirt” with Amy and George Sheppard
- Building a life in Nashville while missing the everyday moments back home
- CMA Fest, SXSW and the nerves that come with singing in a stadium
- Why Amanda and Melanie can already hear Cody Johnson singing “If She Only Knew”
There are big feelings, plenty of laughs and a reminder that deserves to be louder than all that comparison: the girl who dreamed this up would be proud you’re still here.
